Drones are not designed to be flown for long periods of time in
cold weather. Most drones are designed to fly in temperatures varying from -20
degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius. However, when the temperature of the
lithium polymer battery drops below 10 degrees Celsius you will notice a drop
in performance. Larger issues begin to occur when the battery reaches -7
degrees Celsius. Regardless, it is possible to fly during the winter months,
but you will need to pay close attention to these important factors.
1. Understand How the Cold Temperature Affects Battery Life
This is the one of the most important factors to understand while
flying during the winter months. Batteries do not like to perform well in cold
weather. Have you ever noticed your iPhone or Android phone shut off due to the
cold temperature? That is because the battery is experiencing performance issues
as it was not designed to work as well in subzero temperatures. Fortunately for us there are a few things that
we can do to minimize the effects of the cold weather.
To combat this:
· Keep your batteries in a warm place during transportation. If you have spare batteries, keep them in your vehicle or the inside of your jacket pocket while flying. Your drone may not take off if the batteries are too cold or you may experience decreased performance immediately.
· Pre-heat your drone batteries. If you are using a DJI product you can check the battery temperature in the DJI GO application. The temperature should be over 20 degrees Celsius.
· Make sure that your batteries are charged before bringing them to the site.
· Bring a portable battery charger that you can keep in your vehicle to charge the batteries if you plan to be flying for extended periods of time in the cold weather.
· Before you begin your flight, allow the aircraft to hover for 1 - 2 minutes. This will allow the aircraft to warm up.
· If you fly often during the winter, consider investing in a battery warmer if you do not have one.
2. Ice Build Up
In aviation, icing conditions are atmospheric conditions that can lead to the formation of ice on an aircraft. Icing begins to occur at 0 degrees Celsius. Ice builds up on the aircraft and propellers which can lead to prop damage. In more extreme cases where excessive icing has taken place a crash may happen. Please make sure that your aircraft and the propellers are completely dry before you assemble the drone for flight. If you suspect icing is occurring, land immediately and dry your drone in a warm area before flying again.
3. Precipitation
The most important factor to pay attention to while flying during the winter months is precipitation. Avoid precipitation at all costs and do not fly if it is snowing or blistery outside. Pay attention to the moisture in the air before flying. If moisture comes into contact with your drone, it may damage the motor or electronics permanently. Even setting your drone on the snow during take-off or while landing is not advised. You can avoid this by bringing a landing pad if you have access to one.
4. Pay Attention to Your Aerial Photos
It is important to note that exposure and white balance become extremely important when shooting winter photos or videos. If your camera does not properly set the exposure meter automatically your images will appear to be overexposed. This creates a very bright, grey image with little to no detail. We suggest manually setting your exposure and white balance settings to properly shoot or record excellent photo and video.
· Understand what the recommended ISO range is for your payload. Once your camera adjusts the ISO setting above the recommended range your photos may appear noisy or grainy. These images become unusable and require extensive post processing to fix.
· Try to fly while the sun is directly overheard of where you want to take your images. This will result in more evenly lit images.
5. Dress Appropriately
Dress appropriately for the weather that you will be flying in.
You will be stationary for long periods of time, outside, in the elements. Make
sure you wear a jacket, insulated boots, mittens or a transmitter glove, and a
toque. If you’re cold you will be uncomfortable, and it will be much harder for
you to complete your mission. Cold fingers or hands can lead to potential
disaster while flying; you may want to consider using touch sensitive gloves if
you use a touch screen enabled controller.
