1.    INTRODUCTION

1.1 Product Description

The Micro Deval Testing Machine is used to determine the resistance to wear of aggregates in the presence of water and an abrasive charge. The device can perform tests in accordance with ASTM D6928, D7428 and AASHTO T327 standards. UTA-0620A-N consists of a steel frame, two stainless steel jar stainless steel spheres (2 pcs) and an automatic digital counter which allows machine to stop automatically at the preset number of revolutions. Stainless steel drums rotate at a speed of 100 ± 5 r.p.m.

Dimensions

385x680x1180 mm

Weight (approx.)

105 kg

Power

550 W

The Micro-Deval is constituted of a sturdy steel frame which can receive 2 stainless jars together. The jars are made of stainless steel with diameter and height according to standards (diameter within 194 and 202 mm and height within 170 and 177 mm) and are complete with cover and locking device.

1.2.Parts of the Device

UTA-06200E Micro-Deval consists of shaft, drums, electric motor, reduction gear, control unit and cover. Please see Figure 1 to location of the units.

2.INSTALLATION

UTA-0620A-N will be sent as one piece. Therefore, users do not need to assemble it. First, the machine must be properly positioned. Then electrical connections should be made. The samples required for the test should be placed in the drum in accordance with the standards. Testing can be started by closing the top cover of the drums after adjusting the speed value from the control controller.

2.1. Environment

Make sure that the room in which the device is going to be placed have a proper mains supply which is in compliance with the machines specifications. Check the voltage (V), ampere (A), frequency (Hz), and the phase of the mains supply in Table 1.

Main electricity line must be free from instabilities and repetitive power cuts for both the extended life of the device and the continuity of testing. Therefore, make sure that the mains supply is well grounded. If the power cuts are frequent or the grounding is not well enough, the use of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is recommended.

Make sure that the device is placed in a clean and dry surrounding. Direct contact of the device with the sunlight should be avoided. A conditioned room for example, will comply the above conditions and will result in best operational performance and measurement results. Device should be well accessible from the front and the sides for connections, testing and maintenance.

In order to prevent inaccurate test results, the ground should be rigid enough to minimize vibrations or shocks. If there are any other testing equipment or a source that creates vibrations on the floor, device should be placed maximum possible distance to that source. Surface of the ground should be horizontal and smooth enough so that the horizontal and vertical alignment of the device are not shifted.

3. OPERATION

  1. Read the requirements of the related standard of the test.

  1. Open the Bakelite screw on the Stainless-Steel Jar by turning it counterclockwise.

Figure 2: Stainless Steel Jar

  1. Turn the tool used to fix the cover until it is free from the fixing points.

4.    Remove the cover.

Figure 4: Cover

  1. Pour the aggregate, abrasion charges, and water that you have prepared in accordance with the standard into the jar.

  1. Close the jar's lid by performing the reverse procedure for opening the lid.

NOTE: Before closing the lid of the jar, make sure that the black gasket inside the lid is not folded, dislodged or damaged.

  1. Then open the cover of the device as shown in Figure 5 and Figure 6.

  1. After connecting the power cord, turn on the power switch. Automatic digital counter allows machine to stop automatically at the present number of revolutions.

  1. Set the counter to the desired number of revolutions. To do this press the left arrow key to switch the digits. Set each digit by using Up and Down keys. Then press MODE key on the Direct Reader Counter.

  1. Press Start Button.

  1. After the test is completed, the counter must be reset with the reset button. To make a new test, after the stop button, a new sample is prepared and the processes are repeated.

  1. After the test, collect the aggregate and the steel balls in a pan, taking care to avoid the loss of any aggregate. Using a washing bottle, carefully wash the inside of the drum and the lid, and retain the washings. Empty the material and all the washings on to the sieve according to the standard. Wash the materials in a stream of clean water.

  1. Carefully separate the aggregate particles retained on the 8 mm guard sieve from the steel balls by using magnet. Taking care not to lose any aggregate particles.

  1. Proceed for the calculation according to the standard.
  1. MAINTANANC

ELECTRIC HAZARD: It is important to care that the unit must be switched off and the main cable must be removed before starting any maintenance for user’s safety.

The UTA-0620A-N must be used correctly and maintenance and inspections must be performed at regular intervals. Such precautions will guarantee the safe and efficient functioning of the equipment. Periodic maintenance consists of inspections made directly by the test operator and/or by the authorized service personnel.

All safety devices must be functional at all times. Damaged protective covers or devices must be replaced as soon as possible. When safety components are replaced, the protective devices are to be properly attached and tested.

We recommend that the device is cleaned of any particles and dust from the scattered specimen after the test with a water, damp cloth, and brush to avoid incrustations which could damage the paint work.

Maintenance to the equipment is responsibility of the purchaser and must be performed as stated by this chapter. Failing to perform the recommended maintenance actions or maintenance performed by unauthorized people can void the warranty.

Trained technical personnel or electrician must carry out maintenance of the electric system. For a device related electrical issues consult UTEST Technical Service Department or representative.

If the machine does not switch on, check whether the emergency stop button stays in a pressed position or not. If the emergency stop button does not stay in pressed position, then fuse in rocker switch is changed with its spare given. You must first plug out the power cable to perform this operation. After that extract the box which carries the fuse with screwdriver and change the fuse with its spare (See Figure 11 and 12).

If you notice any leakage in the jar's lid, first make sure you close the lid completely. Then check whether the black gasket under the cover is damaged. A damaged gasket can cause leakage.

Check the belts inside the device depending on the frequency of use and make sure that there is no wear on the belts.
