2. Select mould for testing – 4” or 6” – assemble mould and tighten wing nuts.
3. Rotate piston catch arm to block downward piston travel.
4. Make sure correct piston is installed for selected mould:
• 4” mould for Standard Proctor use circular piston without additional weight and release cam at 12”.
• 4” mould for Modified Proctor use circular piston with additional weight and release cam at 18”.
• 6” mould for Standard Proctor use ‘pie section’ piston without additional weight and release cam at 12”.
• 6” mould for Modified Proctor use ‘pie section’ piston with additional weight and release cam at 18”.
CAUTION: Do not use ‘pie section’ piston with 4” mould. If piston and cam needs to be changed, request assistance from Lab Supervisor.
5. Install mould into machine – bolt base plate to rotating plate with two thumb screws
– DO NOT CROSS-THREAD SCREWS
6. Place first lift of sample into mould.
7. Rotate and lock piston catch arm away from piston to allow downward travel.
8. Carefully close and latch doors.
9. Rotate Emergency Stop to power up display
(if power does not come on, confirm that power switch at back of display is on and lit, and if not, that machine is plugged into outlet). Also, check fuse or breaker by the power switch.
• Display should read 4” or 6” TOTAL DROP 00025
10. Select between 4” and 6” mould using ► key
11. Select total number of drops using ▲and▼ keys
• 25 blows for 4” mould, 56 blows for 6” mould
12. Confirm through side window that catch arm has been rotated and locked to the right of the piston, to allow downward piston travel.
13. Press green “START” button to start machine.
• If you need to stop machine mid-cycle, press red “STOP” button, machine will continue to run until piston is raised. Machine will continue with count when green “START” button is pressed.
• Press “Emergency Stop” in order to immediately stop moving machine, or when test is complete. This will reset the test count.
14. Open doors, make sure piston is in raised position and move piston catch arm to block downward piston travel.
15. Place next soil layer, repeating Steps 6 to 14 for each soil layer:
• Standard Proctor – 3 layers, Modified Proctor – 5 layers
16. When compaction of final soil layer is complete, remove thumb screws from mould base and remove mould assembly from machine.
17. Clean ejected sample/mud/water from machine.
Plexiglass is covered with removable protective film. Carefully clean film with clean damp cloth, or remove and replace adhered protective film if scratched.
CAUTION: Piston may travel through hole in the top of the machine. Keep hands/head/hair away from hole in the top of the machine.
